It Was Torture. Literally. I had surgery at BIDMC on April 8, 2022, for a detached retina, which proved to be one of the worst experiences of my life. While in pre-op, the anesthesiologist discussed how they would “keep me comfortable but awake” during the surgery. I asked that they use propofol, having had a number of surgeries and procedures with that form of anesthesia, but both he and the ophthalmologist/surgeon said that wouldn’t be possible. I advocated for myself in every way I could but was denied. I was rapidly losing sight in my eye, so I had absolutely no choice in the matter but to sign the consent form. The entire surgery lasted for one hour and forty minutes; however, I was semi-awake (which is NOT the issue) and feeling extreme pain (which IS the issue) for the first 40 minutes until the surgeon finally said, “just give her the propofol.” I felt every needle and every incision that was made to my eyeball. It was excruciatingly painful. I cried, “why is this happening?” and they told me I was having a “pain response.” In addition, my IV infiltrated (the first time this has ever happened to me). The nerve block they put into my eye was ineffective. Nothing worked. I was in extreme (unnecessary) agony. After I was sent home from this horrific ordeal, I started having vivid and violent nightmares. In addition, the muscles in the back of my neck were strained/sprained from trying to get away from the agonizing pain. It’s been almost five months since the surgery, and I haven’t had an uninterrupted night’s rest due to the neck pain. I continue to have to work with a physical therapist to try to relieve the neck injury. In addition, I continue to experience intermittent nightmares and PTSD responses. The anesthesiologist and the surgeon involved in my case tortured me. Literally. And for no reason whatsoever. I contacted the patient relations office in May, and they conducted an internal “review.” I pointed out that my medical record from that day was full of inaccuracies (lies) and inconsistencies. After waiting for two months, the response I was given was what one could have expected. The internal departments take no responsibility for the physical torture they put me through. Everything was done per their protocol. My question is this: Could I really expect a hospital to have the ability to objectively monitor or police itself? It is a flawed and biased internal process if the records that were reviewed told an inaccurate story of what happened that night…if the details were not properly documented…if the blatant omissions and inconsistencies were glossed over…what other outcome could I have possibly expected? I was tortured at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. It was done knowingly and without compassion…or regret. And I now have to live with the physical and emotional aftermath of their willful disregard for my wellbeing. ADDITIONAL NOTE: BIDMC: If you had read my complaint, you would know that I've already been in touch with Patient Relations and there has already been an internal "review" of the issue. Your response underscores my point(s).

Excellent hospital! Staff and doctors are top notch. They always asked me if I needed anything and made sure I was comfortable. My anesthesiologist was absolutely amazing! All the nurses were so kind and helpful in assisting me with aftercare procedures. Highly recommend this hospital for surgeries. I had a very pleasant experience amd will always be thankful for the care I received here. Thank you!

Isai Delgado is a very rude receptionist. He was extremely insulting to me and my mother. Horrible attitude. Someone should report him.

Poor continuity of care, inconsistent communication from providers.

Paul Glazer is an extraordinary surgeon. I have my entire spine from T2 to my sacrum fused. No other physician I went to would touch me because of the severity of my spine issues. He has made so I can walk, ride my horse and play with my grandchildren. This is not to that repairing what he could made me “like new”. There are drawbacks to any surgery but when you need to be the best possible I would choose Dr Glazer over anyone else anywhere else.
I know some of the others, but I'm not familiar with that particular name. I've been happy with the handful of orthopedic surgeons I've seen there for various parts of the body, so hopefully you'll have a good experience.

Complaints are taken seriously when brought to the right people. Try contracting the patient relations representative for the area of the hospital you were staying in. They have been very helpful in all of the hospitals, and hospital stays I've had issues with, in the past. Their job is to make sure patients and their families have the bat stay possible, or that problems are corrected promptly for that patient or any future issues. They take their jobs very seriously. Commenting on review sites, or filing in surveys, while helpful to many people, will not always get the job done and will certainly not be the most efficient use of anyone's time.
I don't have the ability to answer that question
The doctors at Beth Israel are some of the best in the world. If you have to have a biopsie or surgery done this is the hospital you want to be at.
