One bank used to be on a different continent from the other bank. See 'Dinosaurs, Dunes and Drifting Continents', by Richard D. Little.

The French King Bridge is one of the first stops along the Mohawk Trail. It's a Cantilever Arch Bridge that crosses the Connecticut River Connecting the towns of Erving & Gill. There's a great view from bridge looking upriver, and if you go to Cabot's Camp on East Mineral Road in Millers Falls you can get a nice view of the bridge from below on the shore where the Millers River meets the Connecticut River.

Nice bridge with specular view of the Connecticut River. If one has to really see how the bridge is they should travel to Cabot's camp. The view of the bridge is amazing.

Why is this area called French King?

Many legends have grown up telling how the Rock got its title from which the French King Highway and Bridge was named. A party of Indians under command of a French Officer came down the Connecticut River on a scouting expediton. They reached the Rock which was at the beginning of a dangerous rapid. Just at nightfall, nor caring to attempt the rapids at dark they camped on the west bank of the stream. The commanding officer was much impressed by the rock. It was the most conspicuous object he had encountered on the expedition, for at that time it stood probably eighteen feet out of water. Thinking it would be a good point of reference not only for his reports, but also for future explorations he decided to take formal possession of it in the name of the French King, Louis the XIV

I've heard that there are suicides from the bridge. Is that an urban legend or is it true ? If true how many people are lost this way yearly?

There has been at least one I know of but I don't think anyone needs to continue to perpetuate it in case other lives are lost, nor do we need to know how many happen yearly.
