Mount Auburn Cemetery is worth a visit any time of year. I'll often being guest to it for a leisurely walk. I have visited many times and on every occasion I discover something new. There are plenty of paved paths to follow, as well as smaller hidden dirt paths with unique stair cases to lead you up the rolling hills of the cemetery.

It's probably odd to review a cemetery but this is not an ordinary cemetery. It is a birder's and gardener's paradise and a lovely place to take a leisurely walk. There are a lot of famous people buried here if you are into that sort of thing. We were more interested in the birds and beautiful landscapes. Hard to believe we are in the city when you are walking here.

One of the most picturesque cemeteries in the world. A wonderful place for a walk. Great views of Boston from Washington Tower. Explore flora and fauna just minutes from Harvard Square. Many of the trees are labeled with their latin and common names. Mount Auburn Cemetery is also a hot spot for birders. This is a cemetery so be respectful of the space.

Peaceful place and free to walk around. The Japanese thread leaf maple trees are a popular attraction here. The Washington tower provides spectacular views of Boston and on some clear days one could see much farther than the city. Well maintained place that sees a lot of walking traffic. The eerie silence of the cemetery provides an unexplainable sense of calm. Quite possible because of the green cover. Anyhow, I’d definitely recommend a walk here to calm your senses and soak in the views.

There's an information office right at the entrance
Dogs are not allowed, even on a leash. If a staff member sees you with a dog, you will be asked to leave.
Mount Auburn was founded in 1831, but there were some early interments moved from other places. The online burial search shows no records for this person. May I suggest trying findagrave?
Hello Cathy, You can also use our online burial search on http://www.mountauburn.org, the burial search is the top entry under the heading "Explore" on the website. Also, the Cemetery has a mobile app in the App store which may be used.
You can go to the Visitors Center near the main gate and they can look it up for you. In addition, you can get the Mount Auburn Cemetery app on your smart phone and search for it that way.
The cemetery officially opens at 8 AM, but at this time of year the gate will be open earlier. The pedestrian gate is often open first and you will have to park outside and walk in. 6:30 is safe but I have gotten there earlier and been able to go in.
No. Dogs are not allowed in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
Actually, the hours are 8a until 5p even on New Year's Day.
Usually the Grove Street Gate closes one hour before the main gates. Time changes based on the seasons.
The Sphinx is at the top of the hill behind the main cathedral under construction. One side says "American Union preserved, American slavery destroyed, By the uprising of a great people, by the blood of fallen heros", the other side is in Latin i think, but i can't read it well from the picture i took.
I think the chapel may have one. I would contact Visitor Services at the cemetery to be sure however.
