South Wilmington Street Center is not a good homeless shelter if you have any dignity left. The staff are very rude to their "guests." They seem to have been trained at a prison for the criminally insane. They distrust everyone. I lasted 3 weeks in that hate box while telling myself that things will get better once I got used to it. I was fooling myself. I Left on my own after I had informed the staff that there were people coughing relentlessly in my dorm after lights out & they did nothing to isolate them. My thinking was if they don't care that people are getting sick from the common cold then their attitude toward peole sick with COVID would be the same.

I had to utilize this Shelter a couple times. Great programs and really well organized and structured. Me having a one-track mind and tunnel vision, I was forced to think outside the box and try different avenues. I actually was was offered and accepted the position of secretary of the GAP alliance, being able to inform other residents about places to eat and locations to receive clothing and any additional resources, it was a great fit. The staff really will work with you if they see you are trying to help yourself. I can speak from first hand experience. However; they have jobs to do and take there jobs very serious, they will not entertain craziness or allow guest to try to get over. With me being a Social Work major and always wanting to help and give back. I took it very seriously and as a learning experience.

I use this shelter for my Community Health portion of nursing school. My time there was amazing and I learned so much. The kitchen staff seem to love what their job. The short time I spent with mostly Ricky and Trey made me feel like family. Mr. Harris is a very nice person too. I look forward to volunteering there again just because. Oh, the men that stay there was very respectful. I didn't experience rudeness from anyone

Homeless shelters and services are not the places to expect respect. Most of these people are there because they've pushed everyone out of their lives with the very attitude you witnessed. Many are mentally ill, have personality disorders, or are addicts. All three of those conditions are inheritable and run in families, even in "good" families.
Yes healing transitions of wake county is better ,it's sad to say that the staff at Wilmington mens shelter aren't very nice they treat some different then others ,and it's not right
They provide blankets and they're brand new
No it will not pass. There is an ongoing roach infestation in the Kitchen and Cafeteria! People have been served food with live and dead roaches on their trays! There are also bedbugs (intermittantly) and Scabies infestations in the sleeping rooms / dorms. The staff there does NOTHING about this! They treat the people coming there for help as if they are prison inmates.
They don't, but the new center that opened next door does. It's call oak city center .

I think so yep but you have to drop it off

Or call the kitchen...it all depends on the food items....
White flag is when the weather is really bad and/or its going to be a very cold night and they take anyone in for the night, I hope I explained it right.
