The climb up is challenging and we needed to stop a few times, for only a minute before starting back up. The way down was much easier but legs were becoming a little rubbery the last 100 steps. Of course it started to pour rain around the 300th step up and continued raining the entire time. Still was a very good day!

My husband and I were visiting Mt Union town. We saw that these hiking steps were only a 5 min drive away so we decided to go & we are so glad we did! It was steep but we were ok with normal sneakers. We are in our early thirties and love to be outdoors but we don’t hike often. I had to stop a few times for a breather because we only had an hour to go up and down, so we were going as fast as possible. It took us 35 minutes to get it to the top of the 1000 steps. Once we were there we looked around at the horizontal trails a bit, and it seemed you could go further up time permitting. It ended up taking a little more than hour to go up, look and walk around, then come back down. It was a good fast workout with a nice view. Parking is by the highway. Enjoy!

A beautiful, scenic hike with a Fascinating history. The thousand steps were built as the daily path for miners long ago. In general, this is a somewhat difficult hike but much more so rewarding. There is luscious moss and a few natural springs on the way up. Many stunning rock formations jut out as well. Towards the top is an abandoned historic structure. I'm not sure what it's use was, but you are able to climb on the roof of it and look out over the valley. There were not many other hikers around and the path seems to be relatively secluded. The steps are numbered so that you know when you've reached the thousandth. I highly recommend this hike!

Amazing trail. I would say probably not for the faint of heart or has no cardio stamina. It is all up hill steps. Though every last thigh burning step is worth the views you get when you push. I highly recommend going beyond the end and take the small trail to the peak. It is a very well used path and is beaten down. I went in winter/springish time frame and there was quite a few people there. I wouldn't want to be there when it's anymore busy. Especially if you have a pet with you.

It can be a lil tricky. It is at the far end of the parking area opposite the metal container. The trail itself is very clear
Yes it is. Also hard when passing other hikers if you have a super friendly 150 lb dog as I do. But pet friendly it is.
If you keep a steady walking pace 30 minutes to top.. Another 20 dow.. If you go past the top to the Dingy (cable car) house add 5 minutes.. Beyond Dingy to view of Juniata river add 15 more.. If going to Mill creek Quarry Vista view add 1 hour. If proceeding to Mill creek trail head access add about 2.5 hours more.. (9 mile total hike)
I believe it's on State Game lands so that would be a no.
There's a large pull off on the side of the road right before the entrance to the steps.
There is a history of the Steps on the trail club's website.
The Steps are on state game lands which prohibit camping.
