I was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this tour of a coal mine. It was very informative and historical. I can see kids might get bored of the talking but my 9 year old found it interesting, especially when we related the real life mining with Minecraft LOL. Def bring jacket as it stays at 50 degrees in the mine all year round. Also wear shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty cold and damp. The little museum before the tour itself is ok, kinda dusty and would do well with some updating and cleaning but I guess it’s part of the ambiance. Tours are the first of every hour so we just missed the tour and had to wait about 50 min until the next tour was ready. That gave us opportunity to tour tony museum and walk around the property a bit. Overall, I highly suggest giving it a try!

No. 9 Coal Mine was a fun stop on are way to Jim Thorpe. They take you on a ride into the first leave of the mine were you then have a nice 1 hour walking tour. Just make sure you bring a jacket as the temperature within the mine is a cool 55.

Amazing! We loved it! We were able to ride in a real antique cart and explore the tunnels even on foot to see the hard to get to interesting places. The staff and person who helped us was so nice. He drove us and took us through a tour of the inside museum. The gift shop was very cheap! We purchased some really neat hand carved coal figures for $3-7.00. We purchased some birds, a dog and a bear. The larger ones were about 4 inches.

Great visit. Everyone was extremely friendly, and the tour of the mine was AMAZING. Loved the discussions and talks about the hard working miners. Thank you to the entire staff for the education.

No
No you don't need a reservation... They open 10am to 4pm... Last mine showing is at 3pm . It take about 1hr. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
We follow all regulations set forth in the PA Anthracite Mine Law (Act 346), this requires not only a daily pre-shift inspection by a licensed mine foreman but a monthly inspection conducted by PA DEP Bureau of Deep Mine Safety. As we are a non-production operation the federal inspectors from MSHA do not inspect our mine, however we follow their regulations as laid out in CFR30.
Yes, he will be at our Miner's Heritage Festival this year as in the past. This year's festival will be Sunday, July 14th from 10 AM to 5 PM
My father was born there and my grandparents lived there.
The last day we are open is 0ct. 28th. Although if you have 15 or more people we will open for a private tour.
No you do not! Our tours run every hour on the hour from 11-3. We are open fri.-sun.
I would call to be sure but as edward said during peak season there are probably enough visitors to have continual tours. And as i said in my review, the tour is great and fully worth the admission.
The museum is senior-friendly because it's all on the same level as the entrance and parking lot (which is loose gravel, but you should be able to park right at the door). The museum is very interesting in itself...we spent the better part of an hour in there alone. The mine tour is, as the others have said, uneven walking and cold and damp.
