Typical Russian-style fod, which is good. Typical Soviet-style service, which is bad. The kind if place where a cashier can close the register 20 minutes before the store closing and another caching will forget to put wrappers over your groceries in fact, would be surprised you even had boxes that required wrappers - because she were busy chatting over the phone.

The service is on par with my experience in Eastern European stores (which is remarkably consistent even in stores in Ukraine), but I think that is part of the charm. I usually push my husband to speak to them in their native tongue (but he does the same to me in Chinese stores), but they can definitely speak English. They have a wide variety of Eastern European treats, and the Sweet Kiss cheese is amazing (though, this time, only the raisin version, no peach). Lots of teas from all over and the fruit and veg selection can be quite good (do pay attention as with any store, sometimes, cheaper produce may be close to expiration!). Lots of unique snacks and wines you can't find anywhere else!

Do not recommend it for Ukrainians. It was a good place to visit before the 2022 russian war invasion, not anymore. Кострома-speaking personal over the counter, no more Ukrainian radio, мишибратья-banners. For the sake of fairness, there were multiple handheld Ukrainian flags, but still I couldn't stay there.

I love this store that has a great variety of high quality inexpensive foods from Russia and Eastern Europe. Specifically, I like to shop for Russian pelmyeny "пельмени" here as well as for bakery and meat products, vegetables and Russian sour drink called kvas "квас". This store has also a great selection of exceptional beers, wines and hard liqueurs from Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Caucasus region that are hard to find in a regular American liqueur store. The staff is multilingual, very friendly and very helpful. Without any hesitation, I can recommend this store to people who want to explore and taste amazing Eastern European cuisine.

It is the practice of the store to sell expired food. All sugar coated cranberries have ingredients slip in English specifically attached covering expiration date... Be especially careful when buying "fresh produce" even when looks good from the surface it can turn to be spoiled inside. However, the selection of cheeses, smoked sausages, smoked fish, freshly baked bread, and hot salad bar is outstanding and simply incomparably better than any other place around, IMHO.
