As for food stuff, if you return everything (bulk/multi item) they will allow the return even if it is open. I'm sure they do not put open items back on the Shelf. When I was going back to return my Vitamix. They were specific that I needed everything including the Vitamix recipe book. If you buy something at Costco and plan to return it make sure you keep everything. When returning 16oz bottles of lemon juice they reminded me that I needed to return both bottles not just one.
