What is wrong with your department? Is there no policy in place in the event your "storm troopers" encounter diseased or dangerous animals? Shooting the rabid raccoon would have been far more humane than running it over repeatedly with their vehicles, tormenting an already sick, frightened and bewildered animal. What kind of people raised these "officers"? And what kind of "men" do you have representing your city? I can only imagine a child witnessing Coeymans' "finest" running down an innocent animal who is sick through no fault of its own. Yes, a rabid animal is dangerous, so SHOOT IT, you cowards, and put it out of its misery. How in God's name does your department treat mentally ill human beings? I'd seriously consider investigating these officers and whether they should be allowed to own animals of their own or possibly even have children in their care. They displayed horrible judgment. Disgusting.

You should be ashamed .i don't care if it was rabid there was better ways to take care of it that was inhumane and cruel. Did that make your officers feel big and powerful that they could kill something helpless. I guess you would've done the same thing if it was a dog? All of you should be fired.Everybody is wanting to a killer town.

I am a small farmer in Oregon, with a large flock of chickens we depend on for eggs. Despite a large 9 foot perimeter deer fence, a chicken run with wire going deep into the ground, and a very secure coop, sometimes a raccoon gets in when some foolish human leaves a gate open or some such. The outcome is always gruesome. We finally got a dog to help us out (which of course needed to be chicken trained.) Despite the dismay and frustration of having our farm occasionally invaded by a raccoon, we have NEVER even considered such a heartless and sub-human response. There is NEVER an excuse for such an astonishing display of ignorance and arrogance. In the world of social work (I'm also a Special Ed teacher) it is well documented that an adult that abuses animals is more likely to abuse their children, as well. This should raise a red flag to all citizens of Coeysman that they are NOT in good hands and that the authority of their police force must be questioned. The fact that there were two police cars involved indicates that there is a climate of ignorance, fear, and hatred in the Coesyman police department which need to be addressed in order to help them rise to professional standards. This behavior is absolutely unacceptable in a civilized society.

I’m completely aghast at this; this was not humane for the animal or any of the people who witnessed it-had these been regular citizens maybe someone could have stopped it but who do you call when the police are the ones committing a crime? So disturbing, especially in light of our current social and political climate. I shudder to think if they would handle situations with humans this violently and carelessly. Life is life, guys. A badge is the responsibility to treat life justly.
