Rapidan River (lower section)

Beautiful drive from Madison. Four other cars parked when I got there on a Wednesday afternoon in June, with room for about 4 more cars. Saw 4 other parties on my hike up to Rapidan River parking/trailhead. Not difficult, except maybe a couple of the stream crossings. Saw a water snake on the first stream crossing. He tried to escape, then came back to me. This brilliant sweat bee stuck with me for about 15 minutes! Saw a toad, a bunny, a Silver-spotted Skipper moth, etc. So many boulders to rest on to soak in the stream's energy.

Great spot to hike and take a beginner Backcountry camping. The river is phenomenal.

Beautiful setting for brook trout fly fishing with mostly level trails for about a mile and a half before the gradient (and pocket pools) begin

Hidden gem in Virginia. Very limited parking- the state and NPS need to expand the access options for this one since it's a great feeder route for the AT resupply. Generally flat segments, difficult crossings in spring and following rains. Several bears romping about, so mind the usual back country rules relating to food and cooking. Beautiful falls and fishing.
