Challenging trail but the views at the overlook are worth it. If you aren’t in decent shape, I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise you’ll be stopping every 10 minutes for a break which will make for a very long day. The first hour alone is a rocky incline. I saw senior citizens on the trail but they seemed to be more experienced hikers. I did not see any children but with that said I wouldn’t take anyone under 13 years-old. There’s no access to clean drinking water and there are no bathrooms. A four mile trek doesn’t sound bad but it’s a beating if you aren’t prepared to walk up hill for long sections of trail. Bring plenty of water!

Omg amazing location but horrible to find a parking unless the individual I spoke to was lying. Great place to hike, take a swim or just chill next to the water even water tubing. Beautiful when you get to the top to oversee the water and trains that pass by.

A satisfying day hike. We took the green trail, then blue, then red, and then back on green. Blue trail - historical signs and info about the Parrot rifle (cannons), interior and exterior forts, remnants of stone walls, etc. The overlook on this trail is higher than the red trail overlook, but nas as good in my opinion because there are a lot of trees that block the view. Pretty steep, constantly, until you get near the top. Red trail - most popular, overlook is wide open. Lots of rocky areas you can stand or sit on, or even lie down to sunbathe. Even saw a lizard sunbathing here. Has more variations of steepness and flatness in comparison to blue trail. Not as many historical signs as blue trail. I would probably recommend taking green trail, then red trail, then deciding if you want to add the longer blue trail to your hike.

An amazing trail of 5 miles. This is a moderate hike with 1500 feet elevation gain. It has some great views too! There is a harder hike of 7 miles that looked amazing. Definitely worth it if you are visiting Harpers ferry!

It depends which trail you take. There are many trails throughout Maryland Heights. Suggestion - there is no parking on the Maryland side of the river, park in Harper's Ferry and walk across the foot bridge.

We did the trail with our dog a few weeks ago without issue. Bring plenty of water!
Trail is now open
