I had a 5 star experience working with Justin @ Altier Rare Coins! He is very knowledgeable and professional and really knows his coins and enjoys talking about them. He gave me the best price for my 1877 Indian head cent! A much better offer than the other 3 or 4 coin shops that I took it to. I will certainly be doing business with him in the future and let all of my coin friends know about his shop. It really was a pleasure doing business with Justin from Altier Rare Coins! Thanks for all of your help. Sincerely, Kirk Regalia Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida

My experience with Altier Rare Coins was excellent. Not only was I able to get my coin collection appraised at a fair value, but also sold them there and received payment in full. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to assess the value of, and possibly sale, their precious metals and coins over a pawnshop any day! They also have a wide variety of jewelry as well. Altier Rare Coins should definitely be on your list of places to visit when looking to buy, sell or appraise precious metals of all sorts as they are now my go to for such products and services.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Justin today. I had some coins that I needed valuated it was also looking to make some purchases and needed some professional expert advice. Within a few minutes he was able to accurately appraise my coins, he even took the time to show me comparable coins to back his calculations. Had I not consulted him I would’ve paid way too much for coins and gotten way too little for the coins that I had. He treated me as though I was his most important client and it was the first time we’ve ever met. Because of his open and honest advice We did not do business today, but I can assure you we will do business in the future. Well done Justin!

Should I clean my coins?

Altier Rare Coins | Sep 3, 2021

No! Cleaning coins is a forbidding thing within the coin community. We ask that you leave your coins in their original condition. Many times coins will have a patina, or tone over and change colors. This is a natural process that many coins will go through based on the metal that they are made out of. Cleaning coins can damage a potentially rare coin, and ruin its value. If you are unsure on how to handle your coins, please reach out and let us give our expert opinion.

How to you determine if a coin is rare, and its value?

The United States has been producing coins since 1792, with the first Mint being in Philadelphia. From 1792 until 2020, we have produced billions of coins, making the majority of coins very common. The majority of coins that were produced after 1964, are worth only their face value. For a coin to be rare, and have numismatic value, it must fall into a few distinct categories. The first would be limited mintage. Coins today, are made by the hundreds of millions, and sometimes billions. Early US coins were produced in far fewer quantities than today's current coins. Aside from limited mintage figures, the survival rate and population of a coin would set it apart from that of face value coins. The condition of a coin would be the single most important factor when determining its value. Coins are graded on scale from 1-70, MS70 being a perfect coin, and Poor 1 being the lowest possible grade.
