My mother used to work at Golden Gate national cemetery when we lived in San Bruno in the late 1950`s. We children would play there as kids sometimes. Now she is buried there. A very peaceful place......

Gorgeous, stunning, and humbling. If you have never visited a national cemetery And you are in the South San Francisco area, you should pay your respects and stop here. It's very calming and peaceful as you walk around the different graves and realize the many lives that were lost and warfare and those who were lucky enough to live many years past their service. My family enjoys coming here and just walking and enjoying the peaceful scenery. My grandparents are buried here. It's a lovely place where many lives are memorialized.

My great grandfather Colonel Newton Wesley Armstrong received military honors, he was a civic leader, dean of southern Alameda county historians. Credited as “ The man who put San Leandro on the map,”. He served as a colonel in the United States army during the Mexican war, had a Long career with the military. He took part in the formation of the California National Guard and was called to active duty in World War I. In World War II he was on the staff of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and helped map the invasion of Normandy. Between Wars as a member of the US Army reserve organization, Colonel Armstrong was active in civic affairs of Alameda County and San Leandro Cherry festivals. Always active in civil affairs and the colonel served as the San Leandro Library Board in 1953, and the cities planning commission for a year between 1957-58. Born in San Lorenzo, the colonel was a charter member of both the Hayward area historical Society and the Hayward veterans club. A few years ago we took a trip to the cemetery, for me it was a breathtaking view of all who have served and died for our country, I never did meet my great grandfather but he sure did seem like an interesting person from all the stories my grandmother told me.

There is no cost to bury a qualified person in a National cemetery. Veteran, spouse and dependent child are the qualified individuals. Your only cost is care of the body (mortuary) and transportation to the cemetery.
You can look it up online. The listing is by name and will give you the burial information.
The only qualified merchant marine for VA burial are the ones who served in WWII in the pacific/alantic oceans transporting military personnel and supplies.
Only if the dog stays in your vehicle.
You should call the Golden Gate National Cemetery for that specific information. Good luck...
By the entrance there is a computer terminal and you can search by name. It will show the results for the San Bruno location and the San Francisco location.
The national archives in Saint Louis might have his records. Unfortunately they had a major fire there some years ago and thousand of records were destroyed.
Hello, thank you for your question! Unfortunately balloons cannot be left at a gravesite. Flowers are absolutely allowed but as mentioned they have to be fresh cut and cannot stand higher than the headstones. We have bins located throughout the cemetery that carry cone vases that you can use and leave at the gravesite. Lastly if flowers are left at the gavesite we ask you kindly to not use any outside vases to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Please let us know if you have any further questions! -Very Respectfully, Casey Feuerbach(Skoonberg) Program Support Assistant
There are parking spots available inside the property. But on memorial day, there maybe a shortage. Get there early!
Not for veterans. I would advise you to get everything in order beforehand instead of leaving it up to the surviving family members though. My father just passed and sometimes I can't tell right from left these days. Thank you for your service.
You can go to the VA National cemetery website or Golden Gate National website and look anyone buried there. For the national site the will bring up everyone with the same name and cemetery they are buried in.

Hello Leslie! While I realize you asked this three years ago I figured it would be good to answer for this upcoming memorial day(2022). Everyone is welcome to come help set up flags on the Saturday before memorial day at 9am. Please show up 15 mins before to register your party and an area will be assigned for you and your group to start setting up flags. If the Golden Gate National Cemetery is to far for anyone we're also doing the same thing on the same date and time at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio. No registration required prior to Saturday 28th.
