What an amazing organization! They do so much more than you could imagine. If you have not been on a tour, do yourself a favor, call and set one up.

Dogs for the Deaf provided me with a wonderful hearing service dog in 2001 who lived to be 15 years old. After the mourning period they provided me with a new dog. The entire staff is very supportive, helpful and a pleasure to communicate with. They have been in business since 1977. I wish I'd known about them sooner, since my hearing loss was at five years old. They rescue dogs from shelters and train them and match them up with the right person to make wonderful teams. They depend on donations and fundraisers so if you don't know whom to raise funds for, they are a terrific candidate!

Questions & Answers

We have a non - verbal autistic son. We are thinking about getting one of these dogs for him. Will this type of dog be a good fit for our non verbal autistic 5 year old?

I would encourage you to call them. The only caveat is there may be a waiting list. About 50% - if I remember correctly - of dogs wash out of the program. The training is wonderful and rigorous.

Sue, currently we're still not offering tours or hosting the public on our Central Point (OR) campus. We're continuing to evaluate this, while staying in accordance with state, CDC, and DBL guidelines. Please continue to check back on our website (COVID section) for further updates into summer.

What times are your tours today?

Wanda, thank you for your interest in Dogs for Better Lives. You need a “dually” trained dog which is not something we offer. I would suggest that you look at Canine Companions for Independence, which is one organization that trains dogs to alert a handler with more than one disability. You can also visit Assistance Dogs International's website and search on "service dog trained for two disabilities." Hope this helps. Good luck! - Harvey

Can a hearing impaired person have their dog trained to help them?

Hi Jenni, thanks for your inquiry. Yes, someone can have their dog trained to assist them. DBL does not provide that type of training for people, as we only train our own acquired dogs. I would suggest that you reach out to Association of Professional Dog Trainers (ADPT) and research qualified trainers in your region, www.adpt.com. Good luck!

Good afternoon Jani, Dogs for Better Lives trains and places Assistance Dogs for individuals who experience deafness; with children who are on the autism spectrum; and with professionals such as teachers, physicians, and licensed therapists whose students and clients can benefit from the dogs’ calming presence. We unfortunately don't train dogs for the blind. Please let us know if we can answer any additional questions or be of help in any other way.
