California Heat and Air Conditioning installed our ductless system several years ago. We were overdue for a maintenance cleaning service so they came out to ensure everything was working efficiently. They didn't try to upsell us anything or overcharge and told us everything looked great, so no need for anything additional. They are an honest, reliable company and I am so glad we found them!

My AC (which is an older unit)was blowing hot air in May. They offered me a few solutions, and I went with an extensive repair, which ended up costing me about $4500 including a motor replacement. In Early August the AC started working only about half capacity and leaking water. I checked with them and there wasn't a warranty on the repair (which I should have asked for) and they were like, yeah the AC is busted. So I paid $4500 to extend the life of my AC barely 3 months when for maybe 10-12K I could have got a brand new system. These people are nice and seem to know what they are doing but I didn't get a good deal from them. For my AC replacement I will go with another company.

After reading all the positive customer revIews, I decided to try California Heat AC for an air conditioning maintenance service and they did not disappoint. The customer service is friendly, timely, and responsive, which is a nice change after calling other companies that never called back. The pricing is extremely reasonable and fair and the service technicians punctual, knowledgeable, friendly, and thorough. I appreciated the job done and the follow up from the office. Will recommend to all my friends and neighbors.

Abraham is the best— honest about what we needed to get done, accurately diagnosed and fixed our central AC issue. We didn’t feel like the company was taking advantage of us like often happens in these situations. (And Diana at the office was very communicative and helpful as well!)

How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022

Major appliance manufacturers recommend having a professional inspect and clean your dryer vent at least once every year. However, cleaning intervals vary depending on many factors. An honest recommendation is every 1-3 years depending on: The age of your dryer: if it is more than 10 years old it may need to be cleaned more often. A vent that has several bends or elbows will collect more lint than a straight run. A full-size dryer has better flow than a compact or stackable dryer. If you are using the dryer a lot, it will need to be cleaned more often. Dryer vents that are 5 feet or less in length will not need to be cleaned as often as a dryer vent that has a length of 15 feet or more. The longer the vent, the more it will build up with lint.

When do I need an AC replacement?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022

The average HVAC system can last between 15-20 years, assuming you are keeping up with proper and regular maintenance. A high-efficiency AC can last for 12-14 years on average. If your home is over 10 years old, however, you may need to do your due diligence on your system and how it’s operating. Carefully monitor it daily when it’s running, and take note of any signs it’s wearing down.

Why does my AC unit need regular maintenance?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022

All machines need to be maintained regularly, and that’s pretty much what an AC system is! It’s a machine built to cool a home’s space. Much like cars, HVAC systems need to be serviced every so often so that early wear and tear problems can be detected sooner than later. Plus, it prevents your energy bills from skyrocketing to unaffordable levels, and instead of facing catastrophic failures (which go hand in hand with expenses), you keep the unit operating at its intended efficiency. Just as your car needs a regular tune-up to keep running safely and prolong its lifespan, so does your home’s HVAC system.

Can I do air conditioner maintenance myself?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Aug 2, 2022

Regular AC maintenance (such as changing and inspecting filters) should be a part of your regular household maintenance routine. You should be checking on your system at least once per month to ensure everything is running smoothly, and any small issues can be addressed before they become bigger issues. Though you may be able to correct minor issues yourself, you should always call an expert whenever you aren’t confident you can safely fix the problem yourself.

How does a ductless heat pump work?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

Many people use ductless mini-split systems for cooling, but we usually recommend installing heat pump systems, so they can be used for both heating and cooling. This can help improve your overall energy-efficiency! A ductless heat pump is an efficient zonal heating and cooling system that doesn’t require ductwork. It comprises just an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handling units, linked by a refrigerant line.

My air conditioner is running, but there is no cold air. What’s going on?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

There could be many reasons as to why your cooling system is pushing warm air into the home instead of cool air. Your system may have a refrigerant leak or it may need a refrigerant refill. The problem may also be caused by obstructions on the outside unit. This can easily happen when leaves and debris build up inside and outside of your cooling system. If your cooling system is blowing hot air, it may be time to have a technician out to assess the problem.

Why have my energy bills gone up suddenly?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

When your cooling unit is not working efficiently, you will notice a steep rise in your energy costs. This could be due to the fact that regular maintenance has not been completed on the system, and the system has to work harder to get cool air into and throughout your home. The sudden rise could also be due to an aging system. It is best to have regular maintenance performed on your cooling system to make sure it is running at its full efficiency.

What do the air conditioner ratings mean?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

If you’re considering installing a new air conditioning unit, you’ve probably run across many rating acronyms on the sales literature. If it’s all greek to you, here’s a quick explanation of the various ratings: EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a measurement of the cooling output of an air conditioner divided by its energy usage, calculated under specific test conditions that represent peak load. A higher number means a more energy efficient system. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures the efficiency of cooling equipment, calculated based on a seasonal average instead of at specific laboratory conditions. A higher SEER rating means the unit is more energy efficient. HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures the efficiency of the system’s heat pump. Again, a higher number means a more efficient unit.

Can my air conditioning control humidity in my building?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

You’re right to be concerned about the humidity in your building. Levels that are too high or too low are one of the leading causes of poor indoor air quality, and can result in mold growth, the spread of airborne illnesses, and even computer breakdowns. When properly designed and controlled, your air conditioning system definitely should keep the air in your building at between 40 and 60 percent relative humidity. While there are a number of methods used to help your air conditioner remove humidity from the air, the most efficient methods involve using heat generated by the air conditioner itself to cause the unit to run long enough to remove more moisture from the air. If your building is too humid or too dry, your HVAC tech can check if your humidistat is properly set, or if your system requires maintenance.

Why does my system seem to need more refrigerant each year?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Jul 3, 2022

An air conditioning system that needs recharging of refrigerant on a regular basis is leaking and needs repair. Leaking refrigerant not only causes your unit to lose cooling capacity and use more energy, it’s also very bad for the environment. Refrigerant gasses released into the atmosphere are one of the worst culprits in depleting the ozone layer. Be sure to choose a service provider that uses the latest technology to find and repair refrigerant leaks, since the old methods are very time consuming and will cost you more money.

What is SEER rating, and why should I know about it?

California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio – it measures HVAC system efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy output during the same time frame. The higher the SEER rating, the greater the energy efficiency of the system. The downside to a higher-SEER system is that it could potentially cost a homeowner thousands of dollars more to purchase and might take upwards of 10 years to recoup those costs. Be sure to ask your HVAC professional for advice on the best system for your budget and home.

Does programming your thermostat really save money on energy bills?

California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022

Simply resetting the thermostat when you are asleep or away from home can save money on heating and cooling bills. By adjusting the thermostat four-to-six degrees either up (in the summer) or down (in the winter) reduces the total run time of the heating and air system, leading to a reduction on the energy bill. A programmable thermostat can aid in money-saving measures by allowing you to set the temperature on a daily and seasonal basis.

What causes AC units to freeze up?

California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022

There are many reasons why your air conditioning system might freeze up, and all of them require help from a professional technician to resolve, as only they have the training and correct tools to fix the problem. Sometimes low refrigerant can cause your system to freeze up. Over time, wear and tear to your system can result in leaks that cause the system to lose refrigerant. When your unit loses refrigerant, the system may freeze up due to low pressure.. When freon levels are low, the refrigerant still is forced to expand to the same amount. The more that expansion occurs, the cooler the temperature is produced. The colder temperature will cause moisture in the air around your unit’s evaporator coil to freeze, eventually icing up the coil and impeding its function. Dirty evaporator coils can cause units to lose airflow and, eventually, cause the system to freeze up. Defective blower motors can also cause freezing.

What is a zoning system?

California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022

Zoning Systems separate your air conditioning system’s ductwork into different segments, allowing you to exercise temperature control in each segment, thus allowing for more targeted and efficient air conditioning. For example, you may have a room with many windows that gets hot in the summer and which may need more air to cool down, while you may also have a rarely occupied guest room on the other end of the house. With a zoned air conditioning system, you can direct more cold air to the many-windowed room and less air to the unoccupied room. This allows for more efficient use of your AC system and more comfortable home.

What are the benefits of HVAC zoning?

California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | May 4, 2022

Zoned HVAC allows for better comfort control, decreased energy bills, and higher energy efficiency (energy waste is reduced because your HVAC equipment won’t have to work as hard to regulate the temperature throughout the house).

How do I know if I should replace my air conditioner?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022

What Size Heating / Cooling System Do I Need?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022

A system that is too large will cool or heat your house quickly, but you may not feel comfortable. That's because it will satisfy the thermostat before it can adequately remove sufficient moisture from the air during the cooling mode, leaving you feeling sticky and humid. This could even lead to moisture and mold problems. And, the stress of short-cycling (too many starts and stops) will shorten the life of your equipment and increase your heating and cooling bills. On the other hand, a system that is too small just cannot get the job done, especially in extreme weather conditions. The air conditioner will run constantly in the Summer and the furnace will do the same in the Winter. But a correctly sized system isn't just based on the size of the structure. Many factors go into determining the size of the system. Including type of house and walls, type and size of windows, insulation, basement and attic conditions, house orientation, and so on.

What is the proper indoor humidity level?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Apr 4, 2022

Well, the optimum indoor range is around 35% relative humidity, but 30% to 40% tends to work best for many homes. If you go above this level, condensation on the windows can occur, breeding mold that leads to allergy and respiratory problems. Dust mites, the leading cause of allergies, thrive in as little as 50% relative humidity. Allergens like molds thrive in relative humidity conditions above 60%, leading to a variety of ailments including asthma, allergies and respiratory infections. Too little humidity on the other hand, can lead to dry nose and throat, dry skin, and static electricity, which can also ruin electronic devices such as computers, VCR's, and DVD players. Maintaining proper and consistent humidity is also important for the wood inside your home; flooring, doors, and even pianos can shrink, crack, and warp if not properly humidified. Energy savings is another benefit of keeping the proper humidity level.

What is a ductless mini-split system?

California Heat Air Conditioning | Mar 5, 2022
California Heat Air Conditioning | Mar 5, 2022

A ductless mini-split system is an alternative to traditional heating and cooling like central air. Ductless HVAC works similarly to central heating and cooling, except that it doesn’t require ductwork. Your mini-split system will have an indoor and outdoor unit, but it will only require a small hole to be cut through the exterior wall—just big enough for a tube of refrigerant to pass through. Inside your home, the air will be conditioned and returned into the room by the same unit. Ductless mini-split AC systems are the perfect solution for anyone who wants to cool their home quietly without running ductwork. They’re also a versatile addition to areas of your home that might not typically accommodate ductwork, such as garages, standalone structures, or sunrooms.
