It's a mine, rock shop with raw stones and the professionally finished gems, killer restaurant and gas station (probably forgetting a few things to boot) all rolled into one!! Super courteous staff, mostly all family members, and nice and clean facility. The food was top notch delicious fare for a remote mountain stop. If you need gas and are in the area it's the place to stop because the next closest gas is a long way off!

This is an absolute hidden gem! We stopped during one of our road trips and the owners were incredibly helpful. They helped my kids and happily answered any and all questions we had. They also went above and beyond and helped look for a lost item that my son had misplaced. I have nothing but positive things to say about this establishment, its owners, and the people we encountered there.

It's more of a giftshop. The lady at the shop was nice about the mine being close due to covid but I was disappointed. There's a rock pit in the back you can usually go through to find opals but now everything is prepackaged by the owners. There's no place to wash the rocks and you just have to take it home and hope they packaged good ones. You have to wash and cut them them at home also. It's a shop, not much of an experience. The jewelry is beautiful for sure but I hope they will be able to open the mine back up.

My husband and I spent my birthday here mining for opal. It was amazing!! There are excellent specimens available throughout the mini mine and they dump loads of rubble a few times throughout the summer. We sat on the pile with a college class and several families and had plenty of room to dig and find new spots to explore. The staff was so very lovely!! They were so helpful and really made us feel welcome. The cafe is quaint and you feel as though you've stepped back in time, as though you're a miner coming in for some hot grub after a long days work. The prices were excellent for everything, including the fossils and stones in the gift shop. Definitely worth the drive and hard work. Shown is only one rock from our collection we acquired during our trip.

Are the store that sells opals separately for sale? Want to come Christmas eve or Christmas day?!
Wish I knew. the owners of the mine/shop in spencer , i recently saw in Tucson,AZ on Feb. 9th so they should be back home. Give them a call ! Have fun
20$ for adult (1lb of opal) 10$ for kids (1lb of opal) *10$ per additional pound
Yes -- But there will be no digging due to covid.
At this time the entire mine is closed due to the pandemic. :-(
I was just there. One merchant was open.
Yes you can. They bring down one to two truck loads of opal and rock from the main mine to place at the mini mine. Sizes and quality vary.
The owner lives there year round. If the store is not open you can knock on his door and he's more then happy to help. You can also give him a call and let him know when your going and make sure he's there. Tell him I sent you for a friend's and family discount.. 😊The answer I gave is for Hot Rock Gems in Spencer, I don't know about the other 2 stores
