A conventional home addition is a multi-room structure that is built onto the side of a house and which is permanently open to the main house. When a house addition is constructed well enough, it eventually merges in and becomes the house itself.
Unless you're building up or bumping out, any addition needs some kind of masonry base sunk under the frost line so freezing temperatures won't push it around.
