If you can get on the mountian after mid June on a weekday, you will all but have the place to yourself. Weekends are crowded anytime the roads are cleared well enough to gain access.

Was cold, wet, off-season from the Rhododendron gardens so we were the only ones there...perfect. Unfortunately couldn't see the other mountains due to cloud coverage.

The trail to the overlook was fairly easy. We were with 3 older people, ages 62, 65, and 73 and a 10 year old. Everyone was able to hike the trail with no problem. However, the hike to the grassy balds at Carver's Gap was an intense hike for someone like myself who is not extremely active and who has a low pace job. I noticed several people stopping to rest along the way as well. But the 360° view from the top is breathtaking and well worth it!

There were some at the visitors center but not on the trail itself.
I was there two nights ago, in the pouring rain. If someone went missing it was on purpose. Very well marked.
The cabin...is on the crest..not much more than a smelly stop over for hikers on the Appalachian trail... don't know anything about the stories.
