Excellent hiking trail. Parking spots can be few and far between on a nice day though. Access is available to Flattop, Peak 2, Peak 3, Flake Top, Ptarmigan, and North and South Suicide Peaks along with Rabbit Lakes. Bear spray and bug spray are highly recommended, especially for hiking in the lower areas. This has easy access to spring hiking and melts quickly due to southern exposure.

Did this hike a few years back, we went early June and the lake was still somewhat frozen. Easy hike but did get a little wet and the weather was a little cooler. With any hike, dress in layers and good shoes/socks and it will be very enjoyable!

Parking can be tight. Trail was in excellent condition, lots of people out biking and walking the trail. Very easy with lots of crow berries and blue berries along the way.

Very slow uphill most of the way to the lake (just over 4 miles). There was some mud/water on the trail, but not bad. The mosquitoes were terrible! The parking area was a zoo, but we managed. I was surprised there were not many people on the Rabbit Lake Trail. I saw a few runners and would love to give it a go. We did this hike in 3 hours.

Questions & Answers

Is this the place to park and hike the backside of Flat Top? I have only gone up the front side. Are the trails clearly marked so we know which one to take up? Thanks in advance.

Yes, the parking lot is not as large or formal as the "front side", but there are plenty of places to park in the fee area. The Sunnyside trail is clearly marked and if you go a bit further down the road you will see the Rabbit Lake trailhead. Sunnyside starts with switchbacks and then a smooth sloping climb to the top. None of the scrambling that you find on the front side of Flat Top.

No ranger stations. Use this link https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/alaska/rabbit-lake-trail or snowio.com to check conditions for Rabbit Lake and other local trails

how about effect of fires in the area and smoke from any fire

The smoke limits visibility. And if you have breathing problems I would not suggest it. But the hike is well worth it.
