The mainline is closed off at the 5 mile. You're better off going up crooked finger out of Scotts mills.

There are some safe places to swim - your best bet is to see where the locals go. There are a few places to fish - although there's not a lot of fish - and the area is full of fascinating geological finds at every bend.
There is plenty of side of the road spots you can just pull into..
