Experience a unique adventure by visiting an original civil war fort named Fort Branch built during civil war with a surprising twist noted during 1972. When the cannons were recovered in the river by an excavating company trying to steal yhe cannons. Very beautiful and historic place. Quiet and serene. Nice place to bring the family.

Pretty interesting site. Easy to explore and we look forward to returning to watch a reenactment.

Nice country drive to get here but so worth it! They are open the second to last Saturday of each month but if you would like to come on a different day, call the number on the website and someone will come meet you and let you in. The gentleman that was there was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable on the fort. I recommend wearing sneakers and bug spray 😉 they do a re-enactment in November and we will definitely be going!!

I have been hunting the Federal game lands on the lower Roanoke River for the past 30 years. I live about an hour from Hamilton where we access the river from the NC Wildlife ramp. For many years all through the 90s there was a set on steps built into the bank from the river to access Fort Branch. My friends and I who go on these hunting trips every November climbed those steps to Fort Branch many times just to walk the grounds and take pictures. One year I believe it was 1997 a couple of us went on a weekend in October just to check out and scout our hunting area Cottonwood ,Broadneck Swamp which is a few miles up river from Fort Branch. On our way back we noticed some smoke coming from Fort Branch. You can't see anything from the river only a split rail fence at the top of a shear rock and clay wall which is probably 60 or 70 ft straight up. We tied off our boat and climbed up about 10 ft to the first landing on the steps which were by this time starting to deteriorate badly. We made our way up to the top and stepped in to the 1860s. It was FANTASTIC. We just happened to make our trip to the river on the day of the annual reenactment at Fort Branch. We stayed and toured the full site which we had been to many times but had seen when it was open and alive. The building with authentic artifacts was exceptional. We ate and talked to many people involved with the reenactment and thoroughly enjoyed the day and the experience. I highly recommend a visit to Fort Branch to all who are interested in Civil War History and if you can go for the reenactment you will never forget it. I take pictures on the Fort every year from the river to document our trip but unfortunately the steps which gave access from the river are long gone.
