10 stars! Minus 1 star for not being open much. This is a great place to bring the kiddos to learn about the awesomeness of nature. Or just come by yourself and stroll around the trails, find a bench, sit amongst the tranquility, read a book or just watch the clouds roll by.

I'm a little bias with this place since I worked here as a groundskeeper in my early 20's. It was a great experience working with a great mix of volunteers from all walks of life. I fell in love with observing my interactions with the flora and fauna. If I lived closer I'd be a volunteer. Hope this place gets interest from the new generations because it serves a unique niche of a little taste of wilderness in the middle of the suburbs.

Pleasant Saturday walk through the Shipley Nature Center, Huntington Central Park East, Huntington Beach

A little slice of nature in the middle of HB. It is a peaceful area to stroll around and maybe see a hawk or an egret! The volunteers raise succulents and other native plants that they sell there to support the Center. Next to the Center is a large grassy area with benches and picnic tables to have lunch at!

It is a loop, but sometimes it floods and blocks part of the trail.
There is no fishing or kayaking in the lake at Shipley Nature Center. However, you can fish (only) at the lake off of Edwards next to Kathy May's Restaurant
No fishing is allowed
They are not allowed in the nature center, but they are allowed throughout the rest of the connected parks if they are on a leash. As an option, however, there is a dog park not too far from the nature center where dogs can be taken off their leash.
I would not say that it is completely open. The park next to the nature center is open. The actual nature center does have dense areas of growth. And there is a small lake. But otherwise it is safe.
It says they're closed on major holidays. It doesn't specify Columbus Day.
Shipley Nature Center is run by people like you & me- nature lovers who are enthusiastic about spreading knowledge about animals, insects and plants within these gates. They volunteer their time, so undoubtedly this is why nature center operates these limited hours. When Shipley Nature Center re-opens, please donate to keeping this place going. Such a nice get-away from the hustle & bustle.
