After a great, responsive start from Ernie, things really went down hill. We went back and forth with getting my docs over to him, and when he had everything he sent over a draft of the return. When I sent it over to my brother for review who is a CPA and has been doing my taxes for the last 10 years, he found a number of blatant, careless mistakes. When I sent Ernie the corrections, after 2 email follow-ups to him, he responded 21 days later saying “Once I have time to go through the corrections, I’ll let you know.” After two more emails following no response from Ernie, he responded 41 days later saying, “I’m swamped, you need to find another provider.” I couldn’t believe the response I received after starting my tax return with him 3 months prior. Disappointing.

If you have a very small company or non-profit, you are probably looking at a starting range around $5,000. Some large companies have auditors that work year-round performing services. While many other CPAs are at the high end of the price spectrum, my services fall on the lower end. Keeping your audit cost down.
Pricing for tax preparation can vary widely depending on the type of return. Generally a simple 1040 with only W-2 income starts below $99 and includes the advice of a CPA. Partnership returns can start as low as $350 for a basic two partner setup. Non-profit 990 series start at around $200 for the simple postcard return.
