Hi Thomas, Is this well water? If so, we have a list of labs you can take your water too for testing: https://www.des.nh.gov/sites/g/files/ehbemt341/files/documents/labs-private-wells.pdf There's more information about private well water on this webpage: https://www.des.nh.gov/water/drinking-water/private-wells

Is building a rock dam in a stream considered altering the course of a stream? And if so what are the procedures for reporting such activities

This would probably be considered an "alteration of terrain," so yes. If there is a specific instance of this that you'd like to alert us to, the best way is to fill out our Land Resources Management Complaint Form: http://des.nh.gov/organization/commissioner/pip/documents/complaint.pdf. We are committed to responding to complaints as quickly and efficiently as possible. More info about Alteration of Terrain in NH can be found here: https://www.des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/aot/index.htm

if a well and septic are closer than 75' apart and have been for 50 yrs, living there full-time, and water was just tested and is clean and good...can we put in a new septic system with a waiver, and how long does it take to get a waiver?

Joan Blais | Aug 26, 2018
NH Department of Environmental Services | Aug 26, 2018

Hi Joan! Generally speaking, if the system can be located 75 feet or more from the well, we will require the setback be met. If it can’t, we will entertain a waiver since it appears that the property would be considered grandfathered. Applications for new septic systems (including waivers as necessary) are typically processed within 2-3 days, if not sooner. For a more specific answer regarding your case, please call us at (603) 271-3501. Thank you!
