I have ordered from North Spore several times now and have never been disappointed. The grain and sawdust spawn I recently received (lion’s mane and shiitake) look great. It’s so rewarding to be able to grow your own mushrooms and North Spore makes it possible. When we share our harvest with neighbors and family, they want to know how to get started. I feel very confident directing them to North Spore for everything from spawn to their educational videos. North Spore will always be my go-to.

North Spore is a top company in the mushroom cultivation business. They have incredible cleanliness standards, as I have never had an issue with anything that I have purchased from them. In addition to their products, they are also an exceptional resource for those interested in mycology. They create resources for each "level" of knowledge and truly make their material accessible.

I bought myself the Boom Room growing tent for Christmas and cannot believe how delicious freshly harvested mushrooms are! The oyster mushrooms grow incredible fast and perfectly, and the Lion's Mane is indescribable and hands down my new favorite. My family looks forward to harvesting day and what the Boom Room holds each new week. I love this company and will do business with them forever!

We've been very happy with ordering from North Spore. First we did a foraging class which was informative and fun. Ordered a shiitake grow kit for logs and within a year had a full flush of mushrooms growing, then more flushes time after that on fresh oak logs we had. Recently ordered tinctures and some other items and have been happy with the quality and products. Fast shipping and responsive to answer questions are also pluses. Recommended.

Will spores from the mushroom kit cause mushrooms to grow on any moist structural wood framing in my house?

Very unlikely! The best way to avoid spores is to harvest the mushrooms before spore drop occurs!

My bag of Italian oyster sawdust spawn froze at the back of my refrigerator. Is it still viable for use?

Ilene Goldstein | Aug 24, 2021
North Spore | Aug 24, 2021

Greetings! Freezing temperatures can damage the cell walls of your mycelium but it is possible that your spawn is still viable. You can test the viability by breaking up the bag like you are about to use it without opening the bag. Then, let it sit for about a week at room temperature to observe if the mycelium regrows. If it does, it is still viable. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

How many spritzes each time?

Suzanne Levin | Aug 24, 2021
North Spore | Aug 24, 2021

You don't need to empty the bottle but you do want to ensure the X gets damp! This does require some trial and error. For example, if you go to spray the surface and it seems dry, you want to be spritzing it more frequently, with more volume, or adding a humidity tent. If your home is dry or you live in a dry climate, we always recommend a humidity tent to be sure your kit gets the humidity it needs while growing!

I am starting to see some green in my mono tube is that mold?

Clayton Harris | Aug 24, 2021
North Spore | Aug 24, 2021

Hey there! Unfortunately, that sounds like contamination. There are thousands of spores in the air at any time and they are always looking to make a home where conditions are ideal. When cultivating in a monotub, you are creating the ideal environment for your preferred species, but many other fungi as well. Please feel free to reach out to us directly if you would like to troubleshoot your process!

The golden oysters doing well. The lion’s mane seems to only be developing along one side and is way behind the oysters. Is that normal? Anything I can do? Thank you June

June Billings | Aug 24, 2021
North Spore | Aug 24, 2021

Hi June, thanks for reaching out! Golden oysters prefer slightly warmer temperatures than lion's mane. If your mushrooms are developing in one area, it sounds like the environment isn't ideal on the surface of your block. You might want to move your lion's mane to a cooler area, and try a humidity tent! Humidity Tent Instructions: Simply take a trash bag or other loosely fitting plastic bag and put PLENTY of 1/2 inch holes in it (THIS IS IMPORTANT: Mushrooms exhale CO2 and inhale oxygen. They will suffocate themselves if there isn’t adequate airflow! Mushrooms that look stringy or strange are usually growing that way because they need more air!). Spray the slice at least once per day with the included spray bottle. If you choose to use a humidity tent make sure to spray the inside of the tent once per day to maintain humidity.

What is the advantage of a curved "Handled" foraging knife versus a straight "Handled" knife. (I am Not referencing the blade here.)

Joanne Romano | Aug 24, 2020
Ronel Apol | Aug 24, 2020

Curve handle most usually use for cutting grass or vegetable that are twigs/sticks type so you grab many and cut it safer the straight handles knife.
