After seeing the spectacular sunset turn the lake its splendid shade of red, a natural feat from which it gets its name, we were very glad we chose McKinley. Just minutes from Soudan Underground Mine State Park and both the wolf and bear centers in Ely, it was a good choice for us. In mid June we were able to get a last minute spot for one Sunday night. Only cons were coin operated showers and no shade on site closest the bathroom. Be prepared to pay for trash $1 for a bag but great work on recycling area-2017 2021 update: We returned for a 2 week visit in June. We had to move once during the visit, but both of the sites were completely shaded and secluded. They no longer ask you to pay $1 for trash bag. It’s still gorgeous there. We had time to visit nearby Tower for groceries at Zup’s which had good produce and meat, terrific fresh pastries and a wide selection of everything else.

Great spot to launch your boat near big bay on Lake Vermillion. Only docks and two Porto potties, and car parking available.

NOT DOG FRIENDLY. Dogs are allowed but EVERYTIME we walked our dogs the owner lady lectured us on where they can be and how they need to act. We were in an allowed area and our dogs were not loud, jumping, or acting any bit bad when this happened-very rude of the lady the way she came across in tone too. Very little walking area for your dog, unless you have a lap dog, I recommend you go walk on the back dirt road so your dogs can actually get the exercise they need. The location is great- which is the only thing good about this place. Campsite are WIDE open to each other- kind of like a field. And the playground has seen better days. The beach was good for small kids, but the deepest swim area was maybe 4ft deep- not ideal for adults at all. I reccomend you find a different place if you plan on sticking at the campsite majority of the trip. If you are only using it as a place to sleep it would work if you are out and about in the towns/attractions most of the day.

I think the park is nicely set-up. My son and I have camped a number of times in the last couple years. It's clean great camp sites, and it's quite. The people who run the place are very friendly, and helpful.
