The Bandit
It was a great place full of rich history but is not for the faint if heart as it is hard to maneuver and I would say is only for true historical lovers. But it was super cool and compared to other places is the area is pretty cheap. Overall a 10/10 place to visit!

Awesome experience with this one. Even if you're not a history or military buff. Beautifully preserved WW2 submarine. Tour is straightforward, informative and fun, and you go at your own pace. You can download an audio app on your phone and it acts as a guided audio tour, and it's very well done. Inside, it's cramped, cold, musty, and smells of old diesel and oil, you REALLY experience what these men went through serving on a WW2 submarine. Highly recommended.

Fascinating ww2 era submarine with torpedoes and well preserved equipment. Astonished at some if the things that we could see in there. Recommend going later in the day when there are much less people.

Wonderful piece of history! Located in the middle of the touristy location of San Francisco - Pier 45. Parking nearby is scarce, you may consider parking further away and taking a cable car or a bus to get there. Self-guided tour recordings made by actual crew of the submarine are available - a QR code to access them is available at the ticketing Over a thrilling experience since the submarine is in the water, you get to hear water hitting the side of it and rocking it left and right It's quite cramped inside, in case you are claustrophobic! Masks are required to enter into the submarine

She was not on Orion during the war, but was refit by Orion's sister ships. USS Proteus in Midway, USS Fulton in Saipan, USS Griffin in Subic Bay
The inside of the Submarine is so tight that no wheelchair can go through, also there are Port Doors. So no it's not for wheelchairs.
No. See also: https://maritime.org/pamphist/
She had six war patrols. Pampanito sunk six ships and damaged four others. See: https://maritime.org/pamphist/index.htm
There is an amateur radio club that operates some modern equipment. They are not going to be aboard until it is Covid-19 safe to do so.
All US WW II submarines were named after fish. By the time Pampanito was built the large scary fish names were already used.
Yes,. If you get the one day sf city pass, the entry is free
There are x4 Fairbanks Morse 10 cylinder opposed piston main engines (Model 38D 8-1/8), and x1 Fairbanks Morse 7 cylinder opposed piston auxiliary engine (Model 38E 5-1/4). The opposed piston engine has two crankshafts (top and bottom). A great description of how this works is at: https://maritime.org/doc/fleetsub/diesel/index.htm
It's $ 20
This is a great question. See https://maritime.org/pres/fiveinch/index.htm, https://maritime.org/pres/bofors/index.htm, https://maritime.org/pres/20mm/index.htm The short version is that our restoration goal is August of 1945 when there was a 5" 25 cal aft, two Bofors 40mm on the conning tower, and a twin 20mm forward. When the submarine was donated it had no guns and the foundation for the 5" 25 cal gun aft had been removed in the 1960s. The different museum managers over the years found different guns, but not the right ones so they tried to get as close as could. It has taken a long time, but we now have the right guns and have restored the foundation aft. The last change that will occur is restoring a twin 20mm that we own and mounting it on the forward deck.
