May be the best historical place in Sac. You should see when you travel Sacramento.

I love the Central Pacific Railroad [freight] Depot. Every time I go there it brings back memories of when I did car attendant training there, and also the many fun rides that I took that left from this very spot! There is a proposal for a new track out of the Central Pacific Railroad Passenger station to the north of the Freight Depot onto front street. My most recent photos show that this turn around the freight depot onto front street can be easily made.

Beautiful place just to sight see. Take pictures of the parked old trains (a must see in Sacramento)

Nice unique feeling with seeing those old fashioned locomotives ...gaint size tyres ... big fuel tanker.

Can you clarify your question please? Are you asking if the Sacramento Southern Railroad ships automobiles or were you asking if the SSRR conducts freight operations. The answer to the second question is yes the SSRR is a functioning railroad regulated by the FRA, and exchanges cars with the Union Pacific Railroad. As such, it has access to the North American rail network and can ship railroad cars to any location serviced by rail including not only the 50 states but also Mexico and Canada. If you notice there is an oil tanker car in the yard used for fueling locomotives and it can be shipped to any location for refill. In the recient past the SSRR conducted freight operations for a lumber company on the line on a regular basis. Sometimes the railroad ships antique railroad equipment loaded on flat cars to other railroad Museum facilities for example the Portola Railroad Museum.
Yes the California State Railroad Museum has a fantastic gift shop. It is located at 125 I street. It is inside the museum but you can get into the store without buying a ticket into the museum. You can see a map marker for the Museum's store if you expand the area around the museum. It is labeled "Ca State Railroad Museum Store" on the map. They have plenty of patches and great books and many other things. Great place to Christmas Shop for that rail enthusiast in your life.
