This place was one of my first jobs when I moved to California in 1995. I have fond memories of the place. Great venue, friendly service, none of the corporate cattle run feel, and most of all, a great place to bring the family. And the fact that its right next to Lake Merritt, it makes the place a must see. So if you're in Oakland, go check the place out. You will be happy that you did.

This place need to be shut down. If i could i would give it a negative star, the only reason someone would go here are even give it 5 stars is because they want a movie theater In the neighborhood. It was an awful, awful experience. I found the theater had no consideration for people with disabilities. And after i told the supervisor why i couldn’t stay she kept asking me and then humiliated me but wanted me to say it. It was a 2 hour and 20 min movie about almost a hour into my body couldn’t take it no more i ask for my money back are event a ticket to come back another time even though i was going give it to someone else just didn’t want to waste my money. She made a big deal out of it, she was very rude. Read the other real reviews they said the same thing. The stairs were sticky and nasty It was disgusted! The restroom was not clean and i can go on and on. Don’t come here unless you want nasty and rude Service.

This grand movie palace hearkens back to the deco glamor of the golden age of Hollywood. There is even a n Egyptian tomb themed theater with a cobalt ceiling studded with twinkling starlight. A neighborhood favorite and a true Oakland landmark. Located at the top of lovely Lake Merritt, with a palm filled garden directly across the street. On Saturdays the old Whirlitzer organ rises up through the wooden stage floor with a classic organ player warming up the crowd. Audience participation with a great film is to be expected from the lively, appreciative crowd. The bold, colorful marquis lights are a beloved part of the Oakland landscape.

This place really makes a movie night out a special experience. The main theater had an organist playing until it was showtime. The theater itself is gorgeous, definitely a spot to check out even if you aren't a movie theater person.

Yes
Yes Theater 1
Well just Google the movie by name for its locations and screening times. Movie times are posted on the Grand Lake Theatre website.
Yes and it was wonderful to be in the theater again! Great fun!
Regular adult admission is $13 and children are $9.50. Matinee price is $7.50. The $5 Tuesday deal is temporarily discontinued, according to their website.
It should be 3-16 if I am not mistaken.
I doubt it, unless they have arrangements somewhere, but it'll be a bit of a walk even if they have said arrangements.
Their matinee prices are cheap I paid like 6 or 7 bucks to see the Lion King...checkout their website.
Anywhere you can find a place. Street parking can get a little tight but if you don't mind a little walk you should be fine.
According to their website: "Mighty Wurlitzer Organ played before Friday and Saturday evening shows indicated in green in the Main Auditorium."
Yes and no. It's packed for big movies like star wars or Oscar movies but others are ok. It's raining now so it might get packed for people to get out of the rain.
Only special events I believe the $1 movies were for the children during g the Oakland teachers strike.
All movies, any day, any format, $6 before 5p
Gen Adm $11 Child/Senior $8 Matinee $6 Discount Tuesday $5
You can check on their website and it'll give you show times.

2 hours plus with the trailers included. Careful with the flashing lights of assorted colors also. There have been warnings for risk of epileptic seizures for folks at risk or a history of it.
Layout: #1 no balcony #2 all balcony These 2 theaters were the original Grand Lake Theatre which opened in 1923 (1 screen) #3 &4 were added much later. They were other businesses on the side of the original theater hence the weird side entrance and side exits. They BOTH have VERY small balconies (I've sat in both. The ceilings are VERY low and the seating if you're not small is uncomfortable. If over about 5'8" be prepared to dangle your feet over the ledge! The stairs to both are hidden so look carefully. TMI I know. But I've been going to this theatre since 1966! Yep. I'm THAT old. Good luck!
Seniors are 61 and up. About $3 off.
Theaters 1, 3 & 4 are accessible. Theater #2 is up many many stairs. There are accessible bathrooms and concession stands on the ground floor, prime locations for wheelchairs and the layout allows for multiple wheelchairs to sit next to/near each other. They also have devices for the hearing impaired, but please call first because not all studios provide the proper files for this system to work.
Yes they do, but compatibility depends upon whether or not the studio provided the captions. Call first. With special events and theater rentals, it depends upon what the renters bring to be played.
You can buy tickets (not reserved seats) when their box office is open or from the ticket machine in the lobby, but only for that week's movies. Their schedule for next week isn't published yet, but they're not promo-ing anything on the marquee that's likely to kick Coco out
Yes
You walk to the front and wait in line if there is a line, then there is a box office or a ticket machine that you can buy from.
Yes, the filmmaker screened her wonderful documentary there for a one-night special event.
They run about $5.00-6.00. But I went to a movie late in the evening and it was only $6.00.
