Can't beat this one for the price (free). Very windy and hard soil, so if you need to pitch a tent be sure to bring the right stakes. Bathrooms reasonably clean.

Great facility! I can’t believe it has been available for free… it looks like they are getting ready to start charging. There’s a new sign and fee station being installed. This is a good thing - so the facility has revenue to support its maintenance.

What a welcome, quiet place to stay the night! Well kept grounds with nice covered tables on concrete slabs with nice fire rings and braziers. 10 quick minutes off the 40 but a world away.

The campground itself is beautiful. The road throughout is rough and would likely be unpassable in heavy rain, but each campsite has brand new picnic shelters, grills and fire pits. It is very close to the Malpais Trail and also a massive natural arch that is quite impressive. The host site looks very nice, complete with solar panels for electricity. Unfortunately it was empty. The worst part is that I couldn't for the life of me find any firewood on the way there. Not at the nearest 3 gas stations. It was infuriating. I ended up scavenging from other sites that didn't have visitors as there is no collecting. I heard elk, coyotes and owls while I was there.best part, it's free!
