My husband had a stroke in Nov. 2021. His prognosis was aphasia and apraxia which severely affected his ability to understand words and speech. He knew what he wanted to say but the results came out incoherent to the listener. As a result, he needed speech snd language therapy and was prescribed 2 sessions (30-45 min. each) per week for only 3 weeks by his health care provider. I felt my husband needed a more intensive training to help him to regain his skills as the window for the injured brain to accept new skills is usually within 6 months after an injury or a stroke. My brother happened to find a service called Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program (ICAP). This program allows people like my husband to make “substantial improvement” when the brain is most receptive (neuron plasticity) to learn in a shorter time period by increasing the intensity and repetition of the treatments. By googling ICAP, we found Lyda Kongswangwongsa (CCC-SLP) and Instrumental Speech Language Pathology, the only one in So. California to offer this program. My husband worked with Lyda and her assistant, Stacey for 3 hours per day for 3-4 days per week. Both were flexible and accommodate when we needed to adjust for other needs such as doctors’ appointments. My husband recently completed 35 hours spread over a period of 14 days. His improvements included relearning mouth movements for enunciations, correct words use and simple sentence structures. His regaining some of these skills have helped his confidence and his motivation to do more. He still has a way to go, but we both can see the improvements in his ability to communicate. Family members also noticed the improvements. Lyda also helped with recommendations on the appropriate aphasia and apraxia program apps to purchase to continue the training at home. Keep in mind given the intensity with ICAP, the cost is high and insurance may or may not cover the cost. We paid out of pocket but felt it was worth the cost given the skills he has regained. We highly recommend Lyda and using ICAP if you are looking to regain as much speech and language skills as you can.

Lyda was great. She asked me questions about any number of things, and listened to my answers. She really took time to get to know me and what I wanted to do. She was awesome. And Theresa D and Stacey H were so straight forward, it was very nice working with them!

Lyda has been very kind and supportive in working with my husband’s swallowing problems. We feel so lucky to have her as his SLP.
