This registry is operating in violation of state law. They are charging people who wish to see their documents online. This is specifically banned by a state law that was passed less than 3 years ago. Most of the registries know this is illegal, and do not charge just to look at these records. I don't know of any abstractor who minds paying for copies because we can all bill that to our customers. But paying just to see a document? Bad business. EDIT: To their credit, this registry of deeds has stopped their unlawful practice. Sadly, the Coos County registry of deeds has picked up on it! This is in spite of the fact that their current register of deeds voted in favor of the bill that outlawed the charging of any fee in order to view these documents. When he ran for the office, he claimed that he would put an end to this, but so far he has not done so.
