This is the only legal improved Forest Service location to dig for garnets. Digging in the streams is illegal and will get you a federal citation.

Had a really fun trip to dig for garnets! 1/2 mile hike in from the parking area up an old road. They were very organized and gave clear instructions on how to dig, sift, and clean the garnets.

Beautiful area, easy to get to. However, you have to make reservations and buy a permit online ahead of time...even if they are not full. The process was confusing, we were very disappointed. Many of the websites advertising it don't say anything about the reservations because it is new. The people working were kind but couldn't do anything to help. Thank you government bureaucracy.

Beautiful area. My Son and I went and found garnets. The forest service was very helpful. They made sure we knew what we were looking for and had a great time.

you buy a permit for the day I believe it was 10$ per person

Go to Recreation.gov. Look at the calendar to see when it's available. Probably sold out most days and times. It's popular and limited.

We were also there last week. It was closed. Website said it won't open in 2020.
There was Tweet recently that the site will be closed for the remainder of the 2020 season. I hope this helps you.
