Such a hidden gem! Be prepared for 6 miles of gravel road that takes you up to 3000’ elevation and back down some before getting to the falls. The short .3 mile hike is super easy. We went in July, so I’m sure the volume of water was not at its peak, but it is still worth seeing. You can walk behind the falls where there is a natural cave (thus, the name of the falls). The entire time we were there we did not see one other person!

Short trail, mostly uphill, 3 legs of switchbacks. This is a really big waterfall and at first I thought I spotted some historic pictographs but quickly realized they were modern graffiti. The tree growing next to the falls is very interesting. Saw plenty of trillium and fairy slipper on the way here. Not a ton of parking here.

To get here, a high clearance vehicle is recommended. There are exactly 7 areas with potholes, 2 of which are unavoidable. 8 miles of smooth gravel besides that. This is a very pretty forest road with cliffside views of the mountains below. The trail is only a half mile and has fair elevation gain, 180 feet. I recommend carrying bear spray, I saw tracks. The waterfall is very pretty, flowing much more in the winter/Spring. There is a cave behind the falls, similar to Shellburg Falls and South Falls. The trail continues up a steep canyon wall to a upper viewpoint, (very sketchy, wear boots) and beyond that are 3 more unknown waterfalls.

This is a short ( .6 miles round trip) to Grotto Falls, with perhaps 250 feet or so of climbing. The trail is in good condition. The falls and area are very scenic, and this falls allows you to walk behind it. This is quite far from civilization, and there is only one road sign on the way out to it, so make sure you know where you are going ahead of time. There is a restroom facility at the parking area. It's gravel logging roads once you exit Little River Road (NF-27), but they are in good shape. Please be respectful of this awesome natural treasure, and leave it clean and pristine.

Questions & Answers

How is the forest service road leading to the trailhead these days? I'm thinking of driving a sports sedan (so fairly low ground clearance) there. Bad idea?

Go slow to avoid potholes and you will be fine.
