Great local park, good for families, hanging out under a tree or the sun, and if you have a dog. There's been word of a lady parks person hiding about to catch dogs off of their leashes lately. Friday evening concerts in the summer before kids return to school. Lots of people exercising as well, in groups or solo, also walking laps around it. Funny to see the Ghost Tours stop by every night to bring tourists to the gravestones. There's also AA groups that meet daily.

Best fact. Park built over a old cemetary. There are dozens or tombstones toward the back. I guess there was a old school there and the faculty was put to rest there . Very pretty and slightly spoky. Behind the tombstones there is a small open area hidden from sight . High school kids would frequent this area at night to drink and well.... you remember hopefully . This spot has fast access to Washington st going down the hill for quick getaway if cops come for you. Just dont be to loud especially in the summer two houses are ear shot distance .. Scenic park with playground, exercise equipment and paved sidewalk. There are some benches. Plenty of open grass .. My only complaint is the homeless camp out in the day time and bathrooms are not up to Okay standards. Likely only cleaned once a day. But hey at least they open. !! If the closed go pee in the hidden area behind tombstones

Wonderful neighborhood park. Great place to spend the day, have lunch, and enjoy the outdoors. We have a full review of this park on our blog site and YouTube channel.

Grew in the area, went to school next door, I might be a biased, but this is one of my favorite parks in the city. Good amount of space, lots of trees and typically enough parking. Nice little playground, and some canyons to walk around the area too.

Questions & Answers

Still trying to get over the fact this is a cemetery turned into a multipurpose park/cemetery. Bodies are still there. Growing up Catholic this baffles me.

Definitely quiet maybe because the 4,000 people buried there are dead.

ver the years, Pioneer Park has become a popular spot for family picnics, summer concerts and various community events. It is not uncommon to see children from the school next door playing in the grass and families having outings. Take a stroll along the outskirts of the park though you will be in for an awful surprise. A once prominent pioneer cemetery has now been reduced to a lone row of headstones which are displayed as a memorial for those buried at this park—yes, the bodies are still buried here. You can even find a plaque with the names of the 1800+ bodies whom are interred within, although it is rumored that there may be up to 4,000 bodies buried here. Pioneer Park, formerly known as Calvary Cemetery, served as a Catholic cemetery for almost a century, with the earliest grave dating back to the 1870’s. Important families such as the Bandini’s and Couts were buried here as well as Roman Catholic Father Antonio Ubach. The Couts came to San Diego shortly after the Mexican-Americ
