BCHS is a hidden secrete in Philomath--in plain site. Throughout the year they have rotating art & historical memorabilia shows. They took over the Horner Museum collection that was in Gill Coliseum--now in a million dollar plus facility on the Philomath property. Their new Corvallis Museum is moving right along in construction on 2nd St & will be a huge boost to Benton County. We joined last year when they were hosting their annual lectures.

Free. Interesting exhibits, though a little sparse. You'll need maybe 30 minutes to see everything at a calm pace. I suspect when they move to their new building that there will be more on display. What they do show is certainly worth the visit.

I was told that everything from Horner Museum, which used to be under Gill Coliseum @ OSU. I had spent a LOT of hours there during summer school while my parents worked on teaching credentials. I was VERY disappointed to see about 1/4 of the rock exhibit under black lights, none of the stuffed animals and limited display of WW1 artifacts. Benton County Museum has a nice interpretive pottery collection some lady spent years making. I sure didn't think it was worth the $5 suggested donation.

Wonderful artifacts. The building is ollllld, but the Benton County Historical Society possesses one of the best collections in the U.S.

Call the museum..

I am looking for information and photos of my GG Grandfather, Joseph (J.C)Alexander. He was the Benton County Sheriff from 1862 to 1864, a Benton County legislator from 1868 to 1870, and established Crystal Lake Cemetery. Any ideas? Thanks

The library has many old records, as does the OSU one. If you go to either library and have no luck, I'm sure the librarians would have more ideas for you. This sounds really interesting and I'm glad you are looking into your family's history. I love that kind of thing. Good luck with the search!
