Beauty and Bread Woodshop

It comes from a passage in “The Yosemite,” a 1912 book by naturalist, explorer, and environmentalist John Muir, someone the owner has long admired. The full passage reads, “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.” Our business and artistic philosophy are contained in the concept of beauty and bread, form and function.

Beauty and Bread furniture is different from mass-produced pieces you may see in department stores or home furnishing stores in a few different ways. First and foremost, each piece is made from domestic hardwoods and made by hand using the joinery that ensures stability Pressed wood or particle board is often used in other furniture just isn’t as strong as real, natural wood. Eventually, the material wears away and the furniture fails. All of our pieces are unique in their own way because each piece is made from a different piece of solid wood. Many mass-produced desks, benches, dressers, and buffets are often just covered in a facing made to look like wood. There is no match for the durability of real wood. We believe that one of the greatest benefits of handmade heirloom goods is that you only need to buy them once. Our handmade wood furniture is designed and built to remain beautiful, functional, and durable.

If you are local, we will personally deliver your piece(s) to you. If you are in the states, your piece(s) will be blanket-wrapped and transported by box van using a trusted family-run small shipping company. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept returns or exchanges. But we understand life happens and if you need to change an order after it’s placed, please let us know as soon as possible.

For the bedroom, we build bed frames, nightstands, and dressers meant to last a lifetime–and beyond. We also create credenzas, buffets, benches, desks, coffee tables, and more for use in any room in the house. Each piece is built to order and made from locally sourced hardwood whenever possible.

While we have standard sizes for all of our furniture, we are able to alter dimensions upon request and make tweaks here and there. We generally stick to the main designs Casey’s created, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if you are looking for something completely unique or want to combine elements from a couple of different designs on the site.

While much of our lead time depends on how many pieces we’re building at any given time, you can expect your bed frame to be done in 10-12 weeks while big pieces and bedroom sets are between 16 and 20 weeks. This is definitely not a mass-production operation: We source wood for each piece of furniture, handcraft each joint for a lifetime of use, and finish with a natural oil/wax combination to protect the appearance of the wood. Because everything is made by hand from actual wood, and that wood comes from what used to be living trees, the grain of each piece of furniture will be unique.
