According to them, this is North America's largest model train museum, quite a sight to behold. There are tons and tons of rooms, each with several separate tracks. Adult tickets are $13, with discounts for children, students, elderly, etc. It's not crowded at all. Though I have no interest in trains, the intricacy of the models is seriously incredible and it was very memorable.

My kids loved it! Located in the basement so you take an elevator down from street level. Alot of intricate work displayed. My school age kids enjoyed the scavenger hunt looking for hidden details in each diorama. Our toddler just enjoyed the moving trains and all the vehicles and lights. Takes about an hour to tour about four hallway/rooms. Volunteers are running their trains and working on repairs, ready to answer your question.

I always forget how much fun I have when I go to the railroad museum. I highly recommend this for adults and children. They always put crazy scenarios in there. I'm not sure how else to explain that. There are different areas to explore so make sure you visit everywhere. We had a blast!

What a fantastic place to geek out over model trains! I absolutely loved all of the displays, even the ones that showed sections in progress. The people involved here do incredible work. There are so many details built into every scene.

Yes but it can be difficult..if I want to park, I gotta wait for someone to leave. Don't bother looping. Stay put and ask if someone is leaving
Gregori is correct. The museum is currently only open Thursday through Sunday. No free Tuesdays at this time. I am a volunteer there, but not an official spokesperson!
No, but a good idea for quick entry.

The 1st Tuesday is Residents Free day for the Model Railroad Museum https://www.balboapark.org/residents-free
I don't think so. It's has very tight corridors. I'm pretty sure that only service dogs are allowed in any Museum at Balboa Park. But I do believe they are welcome within the park on the leash.
adult $12.50, kids $9 (4-11)
http://sdmrm.org/admission-fees-hours/4592670211 $11.50 adult $6.00 child (6-14)
Yes they do
Sometimes they will host a train swat meet there and then you can do that
Russ, it's a club with many volunteer members. I'm sure if you stop by they can point you to someone that can help you.
Most clubs are over 10 because of the fragility of the layouts. Also the engine controls are a little complicated for a very young person.
It's in the lower level of the Casa de Balboa building. From the fountain, go west until you get to the main road with the old Spanish buildings, then take the first left into the San Diego history center and either go down the stairs or take the elevator. Follow signs that say "To Trains"
If you are planning on going to multiple museums, I recommend the Balboa Park explorer. It gets you into all of the museums for one price.
Yes. And it is well worth the visit. I've gone there since my boys were very young. Now in their 20's, they still think it's pretty cool (and so does their Mom).
I think it is Haber, but the person who asked me could be misspelling it.
Honestly one of the coolest places I visited and well worth the entry fee. Take a camera, you'll have a lot of fun taking realistic photos of the miniature scenery.
There were decorations throughout the museum areas outside but inside each train area is up to the volunteers who setup and design it.
