Wonderful place in so many ways (the service, the food, the buildings, interesting features, the beautiful grounds) and I'm sure many of the rooms are great, too, but ours wasn't. It was a dingy and smelly room with tiny windows that didn't open. Perhaps that was intended to be mysterious and cool, but one sometimes needs a table to put stuff on. This wasn't the first time I stayed at a McMenamins, but it was the first time I disliked a room. I can't recall if the description mentioned there were no windows that could be opened, but this "attic room" was more attic crawl space than a room. All the staff were great. The food was delicious. Parking was plentiful. ... I just think they took "it has character" a little too far on the third floor.

When you are in Portland want to go to see an outdoor concert, you can’t go wrong with going to this place. The Grand Lodge was a former place for the Free Masons and built as Masonic Rest Home in 1922 by the Oregon Masonic Lodge to house the widows, children, and infirm surviving family of their members who'd passed on. In the year 2000, it became this amazing fun place to stay and watch outdoor concerts and first run movies in the movie theatre. Some rooms don’t have bathrooms as the bathrooms are shared by rooms in some instances. There is an outdoor soaking pool that is very warm and nice when it’s raining outside. The staff at the local eatery outside near the concert venue were nice, both Madeline and Sarah. The concert was lots of fun and about 1300 attended the She & Him show. The front desk staff were nice & friendly as well. There is sufficient parking nearby on premises and there are lots of little nooks & crannies with the best eclectic art you will find anywhere. It’s like being in a book like Alice in Wonderland brought to life. The art makes this place truly unique in an enchanted way.

I’ve visited the Grand Lodge many times over the years and always enjoy the place. I’ve stayed in the rooms once, but usually I’m just visiting one of the restaurants or the lounge. I enjoy strolling the grounds, which are well kept and filled with lots of different plants and flowers. (It’s a shame there’s no longer a disc golf course.) The inside of the lodge is uniquely decorated. If you’re staying over, take some time to stroll the halls and common rooms and look all around you. Note that the lodge does not offer private bathrooms in every room, so it may not be an option for you if you’re not comfortable with a shared WC.

This review is strictly for the Garage Door, which is a concert venue downstairs right across from Bob's Bar. This is a very tiny venue, with a few tiny tables scattered around the perimeter, but each seat provides a good view of the stage. The PA system was notably good, sounding very clean and very clear, without being too loud. Grand Lodge also has the signature McMenamins quirkiness or charm, depending on your point of view. As an example, you will see bathrobe-clad patrons wandering about on their way to the spa, which is right around the corner from the stage. Getting food and drinks is very convenient in that Bob's bar will bring it right to your table.

You need to make reservations. And, it's for soaking, not swimming, and I found it unbearably warm. You can call the front desk one week in advance
By reservation only

As far as i know only service dogs are allowed in the theater, bar and restaurant areas
I believe the whole facility is. At the very least, I know the hotel and theater are open on Christmas.
