Not knowing what to expect, but knowing I had reached a very low point, I entered Hazelden Newberg approx 6 weeks ago. The grace, compassion and knowledge of staff was evident from day 1. The constantly evolving client population was managed effectively and efficiently - not an easy balance to maintain. Groups were facilitated professionally, and lovingly (thanks Carol) often through a trauma- informed lens. Although some individual complaints (we are human after all) had merit, I believe feeling free to complain is an empowering part of the recovery process. Ending my experience two days after participating in the Trauma Workshop was a purging and amazing bonding experience. I’d suggest adjusting the curriculum to incorporate a full day trauma workshop in the middle of the Residential experience followed by a two day “immersive” a few days before exit.

If your life has become unmanageable, if you are ready to accept and change the habitual behaviours that take you back to drinking or using, then Hazelden Beaty Ford is the place to do it. The hardest step is admitting the powerlessness of addiction. Once you arrive at this humbling position, HBFF is there to provide the support you need to get through physical detox, as well as education and administration of additional craving support options. Your specific needs will be evaluated by the professional staff to prepare your individual treatment plan. However there are many opportunities to participate in the planning once difficult areas in your own life are identified. The work comes from you, and the desire to live a life free from substance abuse. It is a process- if you have the willingness to try and the belief that you are worth it, you will be given the tools you need to come back home to a life of sober living. I have tremendous gratitude for the treatment I received at HBFF Newberg, Oregon.

I went to rehab here and found it to be a mostly good experience. I appreciated many of the staff. However, my assigned addiction counselor, T.Bird, was completely and regularly condescending towards and acted superior to all the patients. She frequently made statements that started with "every addict is..." This is hugely dangerous, as not all addicts are the same. We are each individuals and lumping us all into the same category is seriously dangerous territory. She also is not an addict herself, and it really should be a requirement to have a history of addiction in order to be an addiction counselor. She lacked many aspects of basic mental health training. The women's unit manager, Terri, is also a piece of work and was quite rude and also condescending towards the patients. The addiction techs were wonderful, and several other addiction counselors were wonderful as well and clearly have the best interests of the patients in mind. The mental health team was top notch! Hopefully Hazelden Betty Ford will reconsider employing staff like T.Bird and Terri who act superior to the patients, thus making this a dangerous place for vulnerable people. If you are looking for treatment here, I would recommend it, just make sure to avoid Terri and T.Bird at all costs!

I do not recommend this cold and impersonal program. Expect bait and switch tactics of warm and inviting admission staff who after putting all their efforts into signing up your loved one to their $45,00 program use the guise of HIPAA to fail to provide adequate follow up to the family members that have enlisted their services. Staff refuse to pass along essential information or hear the concerns of family receiving relentless phone calls from the person under their care. Find a facility that is holistic in dealing with addiction and understands the role and impact to family who are essential to a person’s recovery.

In gender-specific programs, patients participate in individual counseling and group therapy, educational and therapeutic programs, wellness and recreational activities, and personal interactions with peers.
Hi, Mark. Thanks for your question. Without knowing too many details, here is what our Washington-based staff offered: Most of the tribes have behavioral health services so try contacting them first; if you have medicaid or don't have insurance, call 211 to find out where you can go. If you have insurance, call your provider for local resources. There is some patient financial assistance available at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, but it is often only supplemental funding, not full funding. Please feel free to call us for more information.
I'm not sure, but if you find out please let me know!

There are however computers available in the common area to check emails and social media if it's important. You are expected to concentrate on recovery, not on the outside world.
