The Vanderbilt Mansion site was owned by Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt it was purchased in the mid 1890s and was mansion was built for them soon after. The Vanderbilt estate in Hyde Park was considered small in the standard of other Vanderbilt family mansions. Frederick was the son of William Vanderbilt (1of 8 children).
It was Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt.
