No. What she said. Because of the nature of the caverns environmental concerns you are not permitted to wander on your own. Very understandably so. The tours provided are very quaint and given by nice locals from the area. They gave us plenty of non rushed time at each "stop" to look, take pic's, and take in the scenery. Its a small hike, but well worth the time and walking to experience what the cavern has to offer. The tour is just long enough, but short enough for everyones effort and ability level. I believe they have more challenging skill levels of tours also. Im very glad we were able to experience it. There is a nice gift shop with lots of rocks and minerals take home sparklys geared twords kids interests, absolutely beautiful hand made jewelry, and other things to offer. It must be hard to leave with empty hands. I couldnt. Well worth the stop for a laid back enjoyable experience.
No, there is a fee to visit the cave. And it is well worth it.
Cumberland Caverns offers tours of the cave led by a trained guide. Walking tours are available daily and depart every hour beginning at 9am until 5pm central time. However, there are hiking trails on the property (above ground) that are self guided and are free.
