Being overweight, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease, pulmonary (i.e., breathing-oriented) diseases and other chronic health and mental health conditions are escalating because people are stressed out and their first impulses and reactions are to use food and alcohol to self-medicate.” Essentially, Americans are burned out, exhausted, frustrated and overwhelmed, and food and drink, based upon our basic survival drives, which are readily available, are the cheapest and easiest coping method available for most people. Additionally, the presence and growth of unhealthy, quick options is leading more people to make choices that are more readily available to them (fast food restaurants, etc.) and that are quick, easy and cheap.
Hi. Great Question! In my opinion, and as shared in my book, The Nutrient Diet, more and more people are becoming overweight because of the additives put in the foods that we eat and because people are making poorer health, diet and nutritional choices because they are stressed out, anxious, tired, overwhelmed and exhausted by life and everything going on in this country (Global Pandemic, Inflation, Higher Food Prices, Greater Work Responsibilities, Rising Interest Rates, etc.). And, when people are stressed out, tired, exhausted and overwhelmed, they don't put as much energy and strategy into their food choices because they just don't feel like it. So, helping people make better dietary, nutritional, health, wellness and lifestyle choices has to include helping they deal with and manage stress and anxiety. When people are able to adequately manage (and repel and prevent) life stressors, then they will have the mindset needed to make strategic dietary and nutritional choices.
