Is there no repercussions for the staff when tenants put their rent checks into the rent deposit box and all of a sudden the staff doesn't know what happened to it?

That’s why I prefer to pay online but if the billing is wrong they will not fix it until it’s too late and blame you for it being late when there were at fault.
