Why do you have to pay for parking? I've never paid for parking at any hotel I've stayed in.

In a major city center Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore etc you pay to park at hotels. The rate at the Sonesta is about $48 a 24 hr period.

Yes, you have to pay; however I purchased a weekend package that included parking.

Parking in a city centre can cost, for example, $16 an hour, or $70 a day or whatever. If car owmers get that for free, other hotel guests will in practice be paying for it with higher room rates.
