Follow the detour, it will lead you the right way. I did it yesterday 10/14/2021.
Coming from the east there's a four mile drive up a wash. Watch out for soft spots, we saw a camper van get it's rear wheels in sand up to their hubcaps. No phone service. We were in a Ford Explorer and had no issues. The last 100 feet or so is pedestrian only. There are two points to lookout from, Dobbins Lookout and a second one to the east. Good places to take photos of each other.
Once you get to the other side of the detour, turn left and wind your way up the hill. When you come through the second gate you can see the road up to the Lookout making its way up the mountain far off to your left. The lookout is actually behind you off to the left at this point (you can't see it from there though).
