Yes, a special lens is required for the full frame cameras!!
For canon there are now 4 modern lens mounts (6 total through their history); EOS full frame (labeled EF, works on full frame and APSC, but only on the mirroless with adapters), EOS APS-C (labeld EF-S, only works on APS-C and requires and adapter for EOS M mirrorless), EOS M (APS-C mirrorless, works only on APS-C mirrorless) and the new EOS R (full frame mirrorless and only works on full frame mirrorless). Canon has made a mess of the EOS mount. . They nailed it in 1987 and didn't need to muddy the waters like they did. My advice if you haven't bought into a camera system yet, get Sony. They work will ALL LENSES!
Adapters called "speed boosters" sold by Dodd, can allow certain non full frame lenses to used on a full frame body. However you will often times be giving up auto focus capabilities. I recommend buying full frame lenses for your full frame camera body, canon EF is full frame and I believe FE is crop sensor.
yes, aps c lenses wont fit a full frame . to best of my knowledge.
