Without having it spelled out in an employee handbook, it is at the discretion of the employer. Did you call in to request time off? Were you sick and not able to work and told to get a doctors note before returning to work? Could the medical issue be considered personal and not qualify for a proper absence? Are you asking because they reduced your paycheck? Always communicate through email with your superiors that way you have documentaion.
