Because of health and safety rules you have to be counted in and out. Also there are miles of tunnels to have an accident or get lost in, it is vast underground and pitch dark. The tours are very good and they give you torches and turn floodlights on so you can get a real appreciation of what is/has been done. A lot of it is in worker waggons, so you also cover far more ground than you would do on foot. It is well worth the money.
Our basic ticket includes the underground museum and it's galleries as well as the train ride and dark ride tours.
You can visit the main lobby, but there are no self guided tours.
