I would guess at least 2 inches maybe less. When my edges grow in, during my retightening, they start new baby locks.

Best thing to do is to go into the shop and have consult with one of the stylist they could best answer this for you. This is exactly what I did when I wanted to start my locs.

I would say 2 to 3 inches. I let my hair grow to about 3 inches when I started.

If its really short you would still have to do a consultation and then they start you off with coils depending on how you you would like to start off your loc journey.
